The Alberta Utilities Commission is seeking utility industry input on the implementation of the federal carbon tax. Please register and add your comments to the discussion topics.

The provincial carbon levy was repealed in May 2019 when new provincial government came to power.

In response, the federal government announced that federal fuel charge, known as the federal carbon tax, will be implemented in Alberta starting January 1, 2020. As requested by the utility industry the AUC scheduled a teleconference meeting in preparation of the implementation of the federal carbon tax expected to start beginning in 2020. The meeting agenda included:

  1. Changes to AUC Rule 004, including changing the name from 'Provincial carbon levy' to 'Carbon tax' (Discussion 2 of the project has details on all the changes proposed to Rule 004)
  2. Component category code and type code naming convention
  3. Discuss distributor's learnings from other jurisdictions
  4. Customer communication plan
  5. GST on carbon tax
  6. Pricing for January and April 2020

Public is not required for this consultation as it pertains to the backend preparation by the industry for the expected implementation of federal carbon tax.
